Unlike iPhone, the company did not really develop the entire iPod software in – house, but used the PortalPlayer reference platform that was based on 2ARM cores. This platform was having rudimentary software that was running on commercial microkernel – embedded operating system. Apple also contracted Pixo, another company for helping with the design and the implementing of user interface. This was done under Steve Jobs’ direct and expert supervision. With the progress in development, Apple continued improvising and refining the feel and the look of the software. Initiating with iPod Mini, Espy Sans replaced the earlier Chicago Font. The iPods that came later also saw changes in the fonts, one being Podium Sans that was very similar to the corporate font of Apple, Myriad.
The color display iPods adopted some of the themes of Mac OS X such as brushed metal and aqua progress bars to evoke combination locks. In the year of 2007, the Apple iPod interface underwent another modification as the 3rd generation iPod Nano and the 6th generation iPod Classic were introduced. There was another change in the font and Helvetica was then adopted. In many, the screen was split in half by the display of menu on left and photos, album artwork, videos towards the right.
