What is ITunes?

iTunes is a digital media player application used for playing and organizing digital music and video files. This program is also an interface for managing content both on iPod digital media players and iPhones.

Additionally if iTunes is connected to the iTunes Store via Internet it facilitates buying and downloading iPod games, audio books, music, music videos, television shows, applications, pod casts, and ring tones. iTunes Features

Source panel

It is on the left hand corner displays all the audio and video. Click on any to display content.

Library

Displays what’s in the various media libraries. You can add movies, music, TV shows by clicking the appropriate button. Programs bought for iPod touch come under the application icon over here. As you add more to your iPod collection, you can create multiple libraries – even save them across more than one hard drive.

Store Area

Clicking takes you to the iTunes Store. On buying iTunes starts downloading and adds the title to the library.

Device Area

Any cd you burn or import on iPod, iPhone, Apple TV etc will appear under Devices. Clicking on your iPod, iPhone, or Apple TV and iTunes shows you a summary. Clicking CD shows the progress of an import or a burn.

Shared Area

Browse music libraries to view play lists accessible from other computers with iTunes on your local network.

Play lists

All types of play lists such as Standard Smart and Genius play lists appear here. Party shuffle feature allows you to play DJ live too.

Buttons and Controls

Outer edge of iTunes is full of various buttons and controls such as play, pause forward etc.

Centre of the upper pane displays the songs playing. Right side there are the buttons to change the views within the main part of the window and search box for finding songs.

At the bottom left there are 4 short cut buttons add for creating new play list, double shuffling or repeating play lists and playing albums.

Source List

Clicking this leads you to the main window which displays the category for instance Music. Then there are separate columns such as song title, artist name, album name etc. You can customize the columns. Press command-j on the keyboard to bring up the iTunes view options. Select the ones you would like to give prominence by turning on or off the checkboxes next to the column. Once done click ok and the selected columns will appear in the main window.

Genius Button

At the lower right corner the Genius control is there. After selecting a song clicking the geunis buttons allows you to generate a playlist of songs from your library that go great with it. You can refresh Genius playlist to get new results. Or permanently save it.

The Genius sidebar helps to find new music, movies, and TV shows. Select any in from the library, and the Genius sidebar shows you great recommendations from the iTunes Store. Preview and buy directly from the sidebar.

Adjusting columns in the window

Press contrl+B to open/close the three pane browser area. Then drag a dot which lies at the bottom of the browser upwards or down wards for height adjustment.

Sorting column

The main song list is divided into columns displaying features such as artist, song name etc. Click a particular column heading a small triangle will appear it will sort out the list (alphabetically, reverse setting)

Column Width

To adjust column width (increase or decrease) drag the divider line.

Adjusting Text

To resize columns with respect to fitting the content – right click on a columns title and choose auto size all columns.

Adding/Deleting Columns

Add/Delete columns by right clicking on a column title. A list pop ups and then you can choose the columns and which you would like to add or remove.

To choose which columns should appear in your library or a play list, click ‘View,’ next ‘View Options’ ,and then click or unclick information you want to show or hide. Size of the window

The main iTunes window size can also be changed by clicking on parts of the player itself. You can adjust the size of the various boxes by clicking and dragging the separators.
